Prof. Souha Kanj is currently a tenured Professor and Head of Infectious Diseases and Chairperson of the Infection Control and Prevention Program at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, Beirut, Lebanon. She is also a Consulting Professor for the Division of Infectious Diseases at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. She graduated in Medicine from Université Saint Joseph, Lebanon, in 1987, and went on to complete a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and International Health at Duke University Medical Center.
She is certified in Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has authored and co-authored in excess of 200 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals as well as many book chapters and cards in UptoDate.
Prof. Kanj has presented abstracts at numerous conferences and has been invited to speak at Over 100 international symposia. She is currently involved in a number of research programs, the most recent of which include a global registry on mucormycosis by the ECMM/ISHAM working group on zygomycosis, international experience of antifungal voriconazole containing regimens compared to amphotericin B based therapy as an empiric vs. diagnostic driven therapy for invasive aspergillosis in high-risk patients, molecular and clinical epidemiology of infections caused by Psedomonas aeruginosa isolates and potential for developing quinolone resistance, and molecular and epidemiology of infections with carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae.
Prof. Kanj has contributed greatly to the work of the World Health Organization (WHO) in various programs, such as the R&D Blueprint Annual Review of Priority Diseases, the Global Infection Prevention and Control Network, and the WHO Priority Pathogens List Project for Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria. She has also acted as journal reviewer and editor for various medical journals. Dr Kanj is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA), The Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (FESCMID), and the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (FECMM). In 2014 she received the National Council for Scientific Research Award in Lebanon for excellence in research in the field of infectious diseases and microbiology and in 2017 the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Arab Researchers for excellence in research in the field of infectious diseases and microbiology. In November of 2018, she received the Valkhof professorship, from Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
